THE EVOLUTION OF MUSLIM ARCHITECTURE IN EGYPT
8.THE MODERN PERIOD : We have chosen to denote under this name, the period from the death of Muhammad 'Ali down to the present day. It has no special characteristics of its own. Most of its mosques are entirely covered by ceilings, with top lights (shukhshaikha) in the centre. The roofs are supported upon marble columns, while the faades and minarets are inspired, in their details, by the mosques of the Mamluk period and others.
